About Cognate Audio

Precision audio tools for bass players, designed by bassists for bassists.

Cognate Audio is inspired by a simple idea: bass players deserve tools that understand their unique needs. As working bassists, we know the frustration of gear that’s tuned for guitar, effects that track badly, and practice tools that feel like toys.

When Darkglass released Anagram, we saw an opportunity. Here was a platform powerful enough to run real DSP algorithms, portable enough to fit on any pedalboard, and open enough to let us build exactly what we wanted. We started with the kind of blocks we wanted to use ourselves – on stage, during practice, or in the studio.

Every Cognate block is designed with bass in mind from the ground up. Our algorithms are optimised for the low frequencies and complex harmonics of bass guitar. Fast response, low latency and big tone is our mantra. We aim to give each block just the features that bass players need, the creative tools to expand their horizons and the musical intelligence to let them perform.

What We Believe

Innovation

We push the boundaries of what's possible on embedded hardware, bringing studio-quality DSP to your pedalboard.

Passion

We're bassists and sound engineers. Every tool we build is something we want to use ourselves.

Quality

No shortcuts. We obsess over every parameter, every algorithm, every user experience detail.

Anagram Marketplace

Built for Anagram

Anagram is the most powerful bass-specific multi-effect processor available. Cognate Audio is proud to join the Anagram ecosystem with a suite of blocks designed for the modern bassist.

All our blocks are designed, built and tested with bass and Anagram in mind. We've used our 30 years of DSP and audio software experience, but we haven't rehashed any existing plugins for this collection — all our work is bespoke designed to harness the power of Anagram to give you musically intelligent and useful bass blocks.
